The History Of Moonji Publications

1970

  • September: Quarterly magazine “Literature and Intelligence” was founded by a colleague of editors, Byoung-Ik Kim, Chi-Soo Kim and Hyoun Kim. Publisher Mahn-Nyoun Han and Editor In-Choul Hwang joined the group, also Joo-Youn Kim (1971), Saeng-Geun Oh and Jong-Choul Kim joined in later.

 

1975

  • December: Moonji Publications was founded with the participation of Byoung-Ik Kim, Joo-Youn Kim, Chi-Soo Kim, Hyoun Kim and In-Choul Hwang.

 

1976

  • August: Started publishing “Complete Works of In Hoon Choe”. The publication of the series was completed with 12 volumes in August 1979.

 

1977

  • February: Acquired the quarterly magazine “Literature and Intelligence” from “Il-cho-kak”. Publisher and Editor Ji-Youn Joung. Chief Editor Byoung-Ik Kim.
  • May: Published “Selection of Young Poets”.
  • May: Began the planning and publication of “Author Theories”. 19 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1978

  • August: Byoung Ik Kim accepted the position of Publisher and Editor of Moonji Publications and the quarterly magazine “Literature and Intelligence”.
  • September: Changed the title of”Selections of Young Poets” to “Moonji Poet Selections” and expanded the selection to the new generation. 276 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1980

  • July: While preparing for the 10 year anniversary issue of “Literature and Intelligence”, the magazine was canceled by the government’s “Press Abolition and Amalgamation” policy. This quarterly magazine ended with its 40th issue.
  • December: Began publishing the “Complete Works of Soon Won Hwang”. The series was completed with 12 volumes in March 1985.

 

1981

  • July: Began the planning and publication of the”Modern Intelligence” series. 117 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1982

  • May: Mook “Literature of Our Generation” was published by a colleague of editors, In-Soung Yi, Soung-Bok Yi and Gwa-Ri Joung. Its title was changed to “Literature of Our Times” on its 5th issue.
  • November: Began the planning and publication of the “Modern Literature Theories” series. 39 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1984

  • September: Began the planning and publication of the “Issues and Views” series. 18 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1986

  • December: Began publishing “Articles on Social History of Korea” in cooperation with the “Research Society of Social History of Korea”. Its title was changed to “Society and History” for 6 months on publishing volume #50 “Social System and Social Fluctuation of Korea” in 1997. 63 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1988

  • February: Began publishing the quarterly magazine “Literature and Society”. Publisher and Editor, Byoung-Ik Kim. Editing colleagues, Oh-Ryong Gwon, Min-Yup Soung, Woo-Gi Yim, Gwa-Ri Joung, Hyoung-Joon Jin and Joung-Sun Hong.
  • August: Began the planning and publication of “Complete Works of Pal-Bong Kim”. The series was completed with 6 volumes in August, 1989.

 

1989

  • June: Established the “Yisan Literature Award” with the deposition of the surviving family of Gwang-Sub Kim. The first winners, Moo-San Kim (Poetry) and Soon-Ha Yoo (Novel) were selected in July, and awarded in September.

 

1990

  • June: The death of staff editor Hyoun Kim.

 

1991

  • June: Began publishing “Complete Collection of Works of Hyoun Kim”. The series was completed with 16 volumes in 1993.

 

1992

  • November: The first “Korea Japan Literature Symposium” was held in Tokyo, Japan. Six alternating symposiums were held in Korea an Japan until the year 2002.
  • Began publishing “Moonji Prose Selections”. 18 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1995

  • Began Publishing “Social History Research” series. 5 volumes are published at present, September 2003.
  • Began publishing “Seonam Oriental Academic Works” with the cooperation of Seonam Foundation(Dongyang Group). 22 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.
  • Began publishing the “13/21 Novels” series. 9 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1996

  • Began publishing “Moonji Spectrum”. 78 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.
  • Began publishing the mook “Ida”. Four Issues have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1997

  • Began publishing “Deep Reading Korean Literature”. 13 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

1999

  • October: Opened the Moonji homepage (www.moonji.com)
  • Began publishing books for children as “Moonji Kids”.

 

2000

  • March: Representative Director Byoung-Ik Kim resigned. Ho-Gi Chae took over.
  • April: Entered an agreement with an e-book production, Booktopia, on the vicarious production, and sales of e-books.
  • Began publishing books for teenagers with “Moonji Blue Books”.

 

2001

  • June: Began publishing the “Daesan World Literatures” series with the cooperation of Daesan Culture Foundation. 26 volumes have been published up to date, September 2003.

 

2002

  • January: Established and awarded “Literature and Society Award for New Talents”. that will lead the way in Korea.
